How I Protect my Skin in the Heat

There are a number of things that we can do to help us protect our skin from hot temperatures and humidity. When we expose ourselves to these kind of temperatures, it can make our skin look greasy and oily beyond control. It has been proven that hot weather can make our skin drier in comparison to winter weather conditions. The reason for this, is because, the moisture in our skin is affected by the strong UV rays. Another point, is that Air Conditioning and fans can make our skin dry.
So I've come up with a list of things you can do in order to protect your skin from becoming dry and horrible! I've tested all these so you will have my honest opinion. The hot weather and humidity in India has been an eye-opener in how I need to alter my skincare regime according to the seasons.
1. EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE!
You read it! One perfect way to keep your skin in top condition during the summer season is through exfoliation. By using an exfoliator; you'll be getting rid of dead skin cells that have most likely lead to blocked pores. If you don't exfoliate regularly, especially in summer, it can lead to breakouts! I had a major breakout about a month ago and trust me; it was horrible!
Just exfoliate 2-3x weekly, and that should do the trick!

I've been using the Liz Earle Gentle Exfoliator and its amazing!! Enriched with Cocoa Butter, purifying eucalyptus and fine jojoba beads, this product works wonders in buffing away dead skin cells and impurities to give my a skin a more radiant look.
2. MOISTURISE!
So I had a major breakout just recently and it was horrible. My skin went flaky, red like a tomato and no matter what I tried it just was not getting better. Obviously, after shaking up my routine and introducing new products- it settled down. One thing I definitely struggled with was with my collection of moisturisers, which one would work best.

I tried the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion. Although on a general use basis, this moisturiser is great; I have to admit that in trying to retrieve moisture into my skin was something it definitely did not do. My skin was still rough, red and dry after using this moisturiser for around a week to try and protect my skin. So out of 10 I would probably rate this a 4. 4 because its been great every other time I've used it, but for giving my skin a moisture kick- it definitely didn't do anything dramatically different.

The second moisturiser I turned to, is one that most of you will know I adore- Liz Earle's Skin Repair Moisturiser (Dry to Normal). This moisturiser is designed to protect the skin from dryness and soften it up for a more naturally healthy-looking glow. Enriched with avocado oil, borage oil, echinacea and natural sourced antioxidants beta-carotene and Vitamin E, its non greasy and hydrates the skin. I'll admit, that within the first three to four days of using this moisturiser in combination with my other creams, I didn't see a difference straight away. After a while, my skin did become less tomato-y and I began to see the moisture restored and my skin felt more smooth and radiant.
So make sure that whatever moisturiser you are using- one property of it should definitely be to restore moisture or to protect the skin from dryness. I did try three or four other little moisturisers but saw no effect and to be honest, didn't see any benefit from them so didn't even bother writing about them.
3. DRINK BABY DRINK
This I cannot stress enough. In order for your skin to feel hydrated, you have to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Water is required to maintain optimum skin moisture and give essential nutrients to skin cells. As well as that, drinking enough water can improve your digestion system which will flush out any toxins in the body. In return of this, your skin glows and is healthy.

So aim to drink around 8 glasses or 2-3 litres of water a day to keep up a radiant, glowing, healthy look!
4. The Sun is Great... But Sunscreen is Better!
The main reason we need sunscreen is to protect our skin from the harsh UV Rays from the Sun and the demon that is Sunburn! Our skin turns red and painful to touch when our skin is responding to excessive sun exposure. In some serious cases, you can have your skin peel off or blister up.

You can get sunscreens from any department store. They come in the forms of gels, lotions, sprays and ointments. The strength of the sunscreen is measured by SPF (Sun Protection Factor) which normally ranges between 15-50. Basically the higher the SPF the more protection your skin has. If protecting your skin from harmful UV rays wasn't enough, then sunscreen has the ability to help prevent any skin discolouration and prevent facial brown spots.
5. Get enough zzzzz
A good nights sleep can mean good skin health. Poor sleep can lead to increased stress hormones in the body which can lead to acne. It also leads to a break down of collagen and Hyaluronic Acids which essentially gives your skin the glow factor.

Whilst we are asleep, it gives our skin the opportunity to regain any lost moisture and any excess moisture is processed for removal. Therefore, a lack of sleep can lead to a water imbalance which also means those bags under our eyes which are definitely not Chanel!
Overall, I recovered from my bad skin about a month ago, by doing all of the above. I exfoliate my skin at least 3x weekly. I make sure I drink 2-3litres of water a day. I apply sunscreen daily so my skin doesn't suffer from the harsh UV rays. I cleanse, tone and moisturise everyday using products specifically used for preventing my skin from becoming dry! Finally, I get my zzz! I make sure I get as much sleep as possible so my skin has time to recover.
